- Purpose : In South Korea, Charcoal Sales Environmental Improvement Campaign have been implemented to prevent the usage of charcoal as a method of suicidal carbon monoxide poisoning. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the campaign as a community-based suicide prevention program in Goyang city. Methods : This campaign was started in Goyang city to educate charcoal sellers in late 2016 by Goyang Suicide Prevention Center. Charcoal sellers were encouraged to ask buyers what buyers would do with the charcoal, and inform buyers how to get help when they were in acute suicidal crisis. Annual changes in the number of overall suicides and suicides using charcoal were compared between Campaign-implemented area and Non-campaign area. Results : A significant difference between areas was found in total number of suicides. The total number of suicides in 2017 was lower in Campaign area than in Non-campaign area. There was a significant difference between areas in number of suicides using charcoal. In 2016, before the campaign was implemented, number of suicides using charcoal was higher in Campaign area. After 2017, no differences were found between areas, and number of suicides using charcoal in Campaign area tended to decrease. In logistic regression analysis, the odd ratio of Campaign area was significantly lower. Conclusion : This study found that the Charcoal Sales Environmental Improvement Campaign affects a reduction of suicide using charcoal.
